Week 2: Molecules & Mols Flashcards
What is an isotope? What is a radioisotope?
Isotopes are atoms with same # of protons and electron but different # of neutrons.
Radioisotopes are isotopes of an atom with an unstable nucleus, decays spontaneously into nuclei of other elements, radiation emitted.
What are the 4 major elements?
Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen
Name the order of strong-weak for types of bonds.
Covalent, ionic, hydrogen
Describe electrolytes.
Affects amount of water in the body, acidity of blood, muscle function, etc. Examples are K+, Na+, etc.
Differentiate between cohesion, adhesion, and surface tension.
Cohesion = bond between same particles. Adhesion = bond between 2 different particles. Surface tension = amount of force to break surface layer.
Group together the following terms; synthesis, decomposition, exergonic, endergonic, catabolic, anabolic.
Decomposition reactions are catabolic and exergonic.
Synthesis reactions are anabolic and endergonic.
