Week 2 : Mind and Body problem Flashcards
(28 cards)
Mind-body problem
is the problem of understanding the relationship btw the mind and body
By saying mind
we mean thoughts, emotions etc
By saying body
we mean bodily reactions, heart beat speed, muscles brain neurons hormones etc
Dualism and modern neuroscience
do not agree on mind and body problem.
Rubber Hand Illusion experiment demonstrates that
our sense of self is shaped bot just by the mind, but also by sensory input from the body
The brain continuously integrates sensor information
to create a coherent sense of self
Experiments with virtual reality and brain stimulation further show
how the brain can be manipulated to alter body perception this means that the way we perceive ourselves is not fixed but shaped by external stimuli and neural processes
fixed self idea is
changing, we discuss how our identity and consciousness evolve
Implications include medical fields such as
prosthetics, rehabilitation and psychotherapy
it is difficult to distinguish
mind and body as separate entities
two way interaction
body can affect our mind, mind can also affect the body
chemical changes in brain
learning can increase the concentration of chemical signaling btw neurons, supporting short time memory, acquisation of new skills
Structural Changes in brain
with practice, brain can strengthen connections btw neurons or even increasing the size of specific brain regions, facilitating long time memory and skill mastery
Functional changes in brain
brain can reassign functions from damaged areas to healthy ones, a process crucial for recovery after events like strokes
Neuroplasticity
contrary to old belief, adult brain can change and fix themselves after life events/varies significantly among individuals.
personalized approaches
in education and rehabilitation
Engaging in behaviors that promote positive brain changes
emphasizing that our daily activities and habits play a pivotal role in shaping our brain’s structure and function
Biological approach in psychology
is trying to understand how mind is working and how our behaviors, thoughts and emotions are formed in an interaction with other parts in human body/genetic and epigenetic processes
We dont call every psychologist working with the connection of body and mind
as bio-psychologist
developmental psychopathology
is dealing with the life span developing of psychopathologies (PTSD, Depression, Anxiety)
research interest
instead of subdiscipline
Gestaltian approach
the whole is greater than its parts: A holistic way of thinking
Reductionism
Focusing on the small parts of the big picture)
a single workout can increase
dopamine serotonin and noradrenaline
