Week 2 - Linear Kinematics Flashcards
Define kinematics
Motion of bodies without considering forces that caused motion
Define kinetics
Describes relationship between motion and its causes
Describe a scalar quantity and give an example
Has magnitude only
Distance, speed, time etc
Describe a vector quantity and give an example
Magnitude and direction
Displacement velocity acceleration etc
What are the directions which give positive values for vectors
Upwards and to the right
What is the difference between distance and displacement
Distance = how far you have travelled in total
Displacement = how far away you are from the original starting point
How do we work out velocity
Velocity = displacement / time
How can you work velocity out if displacement occurs in more than one direction
Each can be considered independently and then use Pythagorean theorem to work out the average
Define acceleration
Rate of change of velocity
How do we work out acceleration
Acceleration = change in velocity / time
What is acceleration called when it is negative
Acceleration
What do we need for the equations of constant acceleration
SUVAT (displacement, initial velocity, final velocity, acceleration, time)
What are the constant acceleration equations for S
S = ut + 0.5at^2
S = 0.5(u+v)t
What are the constant acceleration equations for V
V = u+at
V^2=u^2+2as
