Week 2 ICP Flashcards
What does ICP standard for?
Increased intracranial pressure
Signs and symptoms of increasing ICP
-Headache -Nausea -Behavioural changes -Vomiting -Changes in LOC -Seizures
How does the brain compensate for increased ICP
-Increases CSF absorption
-decreases CSF production
-Increased venous outflow (flow of blood)
-Slight compression of brain tissue
Vital Signs and ICP?
ICP rise = Rise of BP
Increased pulse pressure
Slow heart rate
Cheyn-Stroke respirations develop
Etiology (cause) of increased ICP?
-Intracranial hemorrhage
-Central Nervous System infection
-Hydrocephalus (build up of fluid in ventricles in brain)
-Neoplasm (growth of tissue)
Early clinical Manifestations of ICP
-Headache -Vomiting -Seizure -vision changes -Confusion -Decreased heart rate - Speech difficulty
Late Clinical Manifestations of ICP
-Cushing triade = Widening if pulse pressure
-Increased BP
-Abnormal Motor Responses
-Bradycardia(slowed heart rate)
Complications of Elevated ICP (Cushing Triad)
Hypertension ^ BP
Bradycardia ¥ HR
Bradypnea ¥ RR
Diagnostic Tests for ICP?
-Ct Scan (Computed Tomography)
-MRI
-EEG
