Week 1 Stroke/Tia Flashcards
What are some manifestations of Neurological damage
Altered LOC
Motor dysfunction
Sensory deficits
Visual loss
Language disorder
Seizures
What is acute stroke?
Sudden loss of brain function that occurs when blood flow supplying oxygen to a part of a brain is interrupted
What does a stroke deprive the brain of?
Neutrons and brain cells of glucose and oxygen which leads to cell death
What are some risk factors for stroke ?
Hypertension
Diabetes
Atherosclerosis
History of ischemic attacks
Hyperlipidemia
What’s the difference between Ischemic Stroke and Hemorragic Stroke ?
Ischemic stroke is blockage in the cerebral blood vessels where Hemorragic stroke is a rupture in cerebral vessels
After how many minutes of Ischemia will cause irreversible nerve cell damage
5 minutes
What are the 2 types of Ischemic Strokes ?
Thrombotic
Embolus
What are the 2 types of Hemorragic Stroke ?
Intracerebral hemorrhage
Sub-Arachnoid hemorrhage
Random fact: Ischemic stroke deprived brain of blood and hemorrhagic is leakage
Signs and symptoms of stroke ?
Lack of voluntary movement or sensation on other side of body
Paralysis
Sudden vision trouble
Trouble with gait
Headaches
Numbness of face, arm or leg
What does left side stroke impair ?
Right side paralysis
Speech and language
Memory loss
What does right side stroke impair ?
Left side paralysis
Vision problems
Memory loss
Quick impulsive behaviour
Clinical Manifestations for Hemorrhagic Stroke
Sudden onset
Headache
Nausea
Progressive after minutes to hours
Fever
Focal neurological deficits
What is Atherosclerosis ?
Plaque build up in arteries
What causes Transient Ischemic attack ?
Temporary disruption of blood supply to the brain (few minutes to hours)
