What does Industry refer to?
It refers to sellers in a specified market.
A group of organisations with the same/similar sustainable products.
Why do we need a definition for the sport Industry?
Improved Quality and value of statistics.
This means we can calculate industry benefits and assess appropriate level of govt support.
Assess education and training needs
Establish clear direction for the development of policies and programs.
Traditional Sport Structure Top to Bottom:
International Sporting Federations National Sporting Associations State Sporting Associations District/Regional Associations Clubs
Factors of Traditional Sport Structure:
- Allowed all to participate
- Few threats and internal focus
- Few commercial opportunities or professional athletes
- Disinterested state and federal govt and price sector - supportive by not/less financially involved
Factors of Contemporary Sport Structure:
- Corporate interest in Sport
- Media interest in sport
- Government interest in sport
- External opportunities
- Employment of professional managers
What were the changes from delegate to professional systems?
Boards were often committee led and operational, rather than visionary and strategic
Change from club to contemporary system with greater = change from delegate to commission structures/elected boards.
Sport Australia is
the operating brand name of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), a Commonwealth entity within the Australian Government’s Department of Health Portfolio. Sport Australia plays a central leadership role in the development and operation of the Australian sports system, administering and funding innovative sport programs and providing leadership, coordination and support for the sport sector.
Similarities between the Traditional and Contemporary Sport Structures:
- All clubs belong to an association
- Each club has a delegate who represents their club at association level
- Each association has a delegate to represent their association at regional level
Differences between the traditional and contemporary sport structures:
- In traditional the councillors become the board of directors, whereas in contemporary anyone can nominate for the board of directors.
- In traditional, the council appoints staff or identifies volunteers suited to fulfilling a variety of functions throughout netball. In contemporary the board of directors subsequently employed the chief executive who is responsible for appointing all staff to organise and coordinate the sport in the state.
