Define fissure sealant
A chemically active liquid material that is introduced into the occlusal pits and fissures, of caries-susceptible teeth. It can cure chemically or light
What is the outcome of using fissure sealants?
Forms a micro mechanically bonded protective layer that prevents the invasion of caries producing bacteria. Also cuts off the access of surviving caries from their nutrients.
Why would we use fissure seals?
The pits and fissures of the teeth are major sites for caries activity in children.
Whats another reason one may use fissures?
The pits and fissure are more likely to be isolated from saliva.
Plaque is not easily cleaned away by tooth brushes
Oral biofilm remains stuck in f/p
Indications of f/s
