What is the bass techniqe?
Designed for intrasulcular cleaning. Brush at 45 degree angle. Gentle short vibrations side to side motion towards incisal/occlusal surface
What is the modified bass technique?
- Brush at 45 degree angle towards gingiva.
- Rotate brush against gingival margin
- Gentle short circular motion towards incisal and occlusal edges
What is Stillmans Technique
Developed to promote ginigval stimulation.
- Toothbrush angled toward the apex partly on tooth and gingiva.
- Roll towards incisal edge
What is the Charters Technique
Technique to aid in interproximal ortho cleaning
- Angled at 45 degrees with bristle tops facing occlusal plane, partly on the tooth and gingivae
- Roll towards incisal edge
What is the Fones technique
Easy to learn technique - good for children
- Close teeth together
- Brush upp & lwr surfaces with large circular movements
- On the lingual seperate arches, using smaller strokes.
What can influence tooth brushing?
Sequencing eg. are the teeth being brushed for them.
Time of brusing: clock, counting, built in timers
Frequency: Twice a day and night before bed time. Always consider the patients.
What other hygiene instructions should we implement?
Tongue cleaning, interdental cleaning
How do we floss?
- Dispense a 30cm piece of floss
- Wrap around middle fingers
- Use thumbs and pointer fingers to guide floss
- Ease over contact point
- Wrap around proximal aspect of teeth in a ācā
- Slide up and down (do no saw) bringing beneath the gingival margin
- Use different parts of the floss
- Floss before brushing
What is superfloss?
Ideal for fixed prothesis, orthodontics, impants
What are some flossing aids?
Floss holders
Floss threaders
Tooth picks
Denture Hygiene?
Clean twice a day over a basin filled with water (to avoid breakage if dropped)
Remove plaque and debris from gums with a wet facewasher
Remove in the evening and store in dry container.
Avoid using cleaning agents or brushes, boiling water, detergents, bleaches or anything strong.
Chemothereputic mouth rinses should be used when?
Short term use only, used as an adjunct not in replacement of brushing and flossing
Describe alcohol mouthwash
Optimal antimicrobial activity at 50-90% concentration. It is used as a solvent, preservative and antiseptic. Broad spectrum activity versus bacteria, fungi, viruses. Studies have shown that alcohol mouthwashes can have a detriments. Not recommended for long term use. Recommened alchohol-free mouth washes
What are the contraindications for alchohol mouth wash?
Xerostomia, dental erosion due to low oral pH, oral mucosal disease due to irritation and dryness. Unsuitable for children.
Essential oil mouthrinses?
Can be effective in plaque formation although mechanical removal of plaque is needed to disrupt the biofilm
