where does the casualty collection point need to be located?
• Safe distance from the scene (uphill and upwind).
• Appropriate size for patient numbers.
• Provides shelter to patients.
• Attempt to separate patients according to priority to facilitate
access. What issues could you face here?
• Instruct patients to remain where they are.
• More than one CCP may be required with additional Triage
Officers appointed if scene spread over large distance.
What is the ambulance holding point?
• Identified and managed by the Transport Officer
• Used when the Ambulance Loading Point has poor access
• Resources are directed to the Holding Point
• Crew remain at the Holding Point until called forward by the
Transport Officer.
• Ensure if you are second or subsequent crew that you go
to where you are directed as it may not be the scene
address but the holding or loading points.
What is sectorisation?
Used with large scenes such as Burke St Mall
• Is a smaller area of the Incident Scene, which is divided up to
ensure effective control and management of operations
• May be designated due to a geographical area, or another
function such as number of patients etc.
• May have a second Triage Officer and Transport Officer
allocated to the area to manage it
What is the primary role of the Triage Officer?
to provide initial scene leadership,
ensuring that the following actions are carried out:
• Assume scene leadership role
• Ensure patients are triaged and tagged using SmartPac triage cards
• Provide direction for oncoming resources- next week
• Ensure that timely and accurate SITREPS are provided
• Establish scene layout – locations for Casualty Clearing Point,Loading
Point, Holding Point
• Reports to oncoming Incident Health Commander when established
What is the primary role of the Transport Officer?
supports the Triage Officer in management of the scene,
and works at their direction.
The Transport Officer’s tasks may include what?
- Undertake patient management
- Coordinate transport vehicles to ensure appropriate transfer of patients
- Commence and maintain a Casualty Movement Log relating to transported patients
- Ensure appropriate access and egress for responding vehicles
- Supervise the Casualty Clearing Point
