Week 1 Flashcards
What is a major incident?
• Is a complex scene (for a range of reasons).
• Is not routine and requires specialist skills or organisations.
• May include multiple casualties, multiple agencies,
protracted/complex incidents, or even just an incident
attracting public interest
• Major incidents will generally be managed using an
Emergency Response Plan.
What are some logistical challenges at a major incident?
- Hazard identification
- Switching of roles
- Taking control
- Others on scene
- Complex locations
- # of patients
- skill sets of treating crews
- requirement to manage scene rather than the patient
- triage
What is the purpose of an Emergency Response Plan (ERP)?
to identify and then separate a
major incident from normal business operations.
What are the 3 stages of an Emergency Response plan (ERP)?
- Recognition
- Response
- Recovery
What happens during the Recognition stage of the ERP?
Recognition
• This is the alert and escalation phase.
• The notification stage commences when the initial call has been received in the Comms Centre.
What happens during the Response stage of the ERP?
Response
• Commences when the first resource arrives on scene and provides a windscreen SitRep. This allows the response level of the major incident to be re-assessed.
• Conduct a reconnaissance and provide ETHANE SitRep as soon as possible.
What happens during the Recovery stage of the ERP?
Recovery
• This stage continues until the last resource has left the incident and all patients have been cared for.
• The recovery stage commences concurrently with response.
• Recovery is where the organisation restores and replaces resources and accounts for all actions that were taken in response to managing the incident.
What is the acronym for a windscreen sitrep
METHANE
What does METHANE stand for?
M - confirm major incident E - exact location T - type of incident H - Hazards at scene A - Access/Egress to scene N - Number of patients E - Emergency services on scene and/or required
How often do you give METHANE sitrep?
Every 15 minutes
or when something changes
