Week 2 Flashcards
What does the respiratory system do and what are the main structures in it?
The respiratory system supplies forces of air used to sustain sound
The main structures of the respiratory system are the lungs and trachea
What is a breath group?
The sounds produced in a single expiration
What does the laryngeal system do?
Creates vibrations through the vocal folds
The main structures are the larynx and the vocal folds
What does the supralaryngeal system do?
Uses vibrations to create sound
There are three different cavities: nasal, oral, pharyngeal
The articulators include the hard palate, the soft palate, the teeth, the tongue, and the lips
What are some technologies that were discussed in class?
X-ray, MRI, ultrasound
Electropalatography: sensors used to observe where the tongue is moving on the roof of the mouth
Fiberoptic endoscopy: A small camera goes through the nose to observe vocal folds
Acoustic analysis: Measurement of sound energy that can be illustrated using spectrograms
What part of the tongue makes up the main bulk and helps with vowel articulation?
The body
What part of the tongue makes up 50% of consonant contacts
The tip
What part of the tongue makes back sounds?
The dorsum
What part of the tongue forms the front wall of the pharynx and makes low back vowels?
