Q

What therapeutic technique is characterized by questions such as “ what does that remind you of?”

Pschoanalysis technique (opposite of Humanistic Therapy)

A

free association - encouraging you to say the first word or thought that comes to mind. (Spontaneous reporting of all thoughts and feelings in order to uncover unconscious memories and anxieties)

If you pause or ‘censor’ a thought before saying it, the psychoanalyst might treat these events as a sign of resistance (important step in analysis: blocking anxiety-producing memories from reaching conscious awareness during a psychoanalysis). It could indicate these issues are creating anxiety for you or unresolved conflicts that need attention. They might also provide analysis of your dreams.

You might also have transference – emotions from unresolved conflicts toward the analyst, instead of the person of the source of the conflicts (can be love or hatred)

Ex: if you are late to work or to the therapy sessions often, it could be interpreted as hidden hostility toward authority figures.

  3. We all have a deep desire to strive for improvement

Attempts to help people gain self-awareness and self-acceptance, while taking responsibility for their own actions and feelings – toward reaching their full potential.

Q

Cognitive Therapies involve what?

A

Try to teach people new ways to think about their current problems and their future options and help them look at themselves in new, more positive ways. To help identify irrational thoughts and unrealistic beliefs and teach more adaptive behaviours.

to modify the way we think

  • teaching client to pick out destructive thoughts to deal with them and replace them with the correct emotional response.
  • Meant to be short-term only. Client needs to take these newly learned skills in to the world and use it themselves.
  • ‘de-sensitization therapy’ is used. Virtual reality is used for severe phobias to expose clients to increasingly triggering situations until handled with ease
  • not good for people with severe psychopathy though

(not to learn to accept our automatic thoughts or to focus on insight)
