HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is the main protocol used to access data on the WWW.

• transaction oriented client/server protocol
• usually between web browser (client) and web server
• use TCP connections
• stateless

3 types of web document?

3 types of web document:
1. static documents are fixed-content documents that are created and stored in a server.
The contents of the file are determined when the file is created, not when it is used. static documents are prepared using one of the several languages: HTML, XML or XHTML.

2. dynamic documents is created by a web server whenever a browser request the document. a few technologies have been involved in creating dynamic documents using scripts. such as PHP, Java Server Pages (JSP) or Active Server Pages (ASP).
3. active documents is a program or a script to be run at the client site. the ways to create an active document is to use Java applets or javascript.
