week 12 - male reproduction Flashcards
1
Q
where does spermatogenesis occur?
A
Seminiferous tubules
2
Q
what do sertoli cells (nursing cells) do?
A
- protect developing sperm
- form a blood-testis barrier
- produce inhibin
3
Q
what do leydig cells (interstitial cells) do?
A
produce testosterone
4
Q
what does the epididymis do?
A
- connects testis to vas deferens
- place where sperm completes maturation & is stored
5
Q
what do vas/ductus deferens do?
A
- tube from epididymis to pelvic cavity
- connects urethra through ejaculatory duct
6
Q
what does the scrotum do?
A
sac: muscles in walls contract or relax to maintain temperature
7
Q
what are the accessory glands?
A
- prostate - produces acidic fluid
- seminal gland - slightly alkalic fluid
- bulbourethral glands - lubricates + neutralises
8
Q
penis do?
A
- delivers semen
- erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa + corpus spongiosum)
9
Q
urethra do?
A
- transports urine + semen
10
Q
Endocrine hormone in spermatogenesis
A
- GnRH stimulates LH and FSH secretion
- FSH stimulates Sertoli cells = inhibin
- LH stimulates Leydig cells = testosterone
- Inhibin inhibits GnRH & FSH secretions
- Testosterone inhibits GnRH & LH secretions
