week 10 - digestion Flashcards
what are the 4 major layers of digestion?
- mucosa (inner lining)
- submucosa (blood vessels + lymphatic vessels)
- muscularis externa (smooth muscle cells)
- serosa (covers 3)
what parts of the body do mechanical processing?
- mouth
- oesophagus (peristalsis)
- stomach (peristalsis)
- small intestine (peristalsis)
what is the process of peristalisis?
- contraction of circular muscles behind bolus
- contraction of longitudinal muscles ahead of bolus
- contraction of circular muscle layer forces bolus forward
what parts of the body do chemical digestion?
PROTEINS AND CARBS
- stomach: protein > polypeptides > peptides > amino acids
- mouth: polysaccharides > trisaccharides
- small intestine: disaccharides > monosaccharides
FATS
- mouth: lipids/fat/triglycerides >
- small intestine: monoglyceride + fatty acids
what happens during protein absorption?
- proteins are absorbed as amino acids
- travel in blood to liver
what happens during carb absorption?
- absorbed as monosaccharides
- travel in blood to liver
what happens during lipid absorption?
- surrounded by bile to form molecules
- re-packaged into chylomicrons
what happens during water absorption?
- movement across epithelium involves passive flow down osmotic gradient
what is catabolism?
- breakdown larger organic molecules into smaller ones
- release energy
what is anabolism?
- use simple molecules to make larger ones
- consume energy
what is glycolysis (in regard to glucose catabolism)?
breakdown of glucose
steps of glucose anabolism?
- glycogenesis: storage of glucose in liver
- gluconeogenesis: production of glucose when levels are low
what is metabolism controlled by?
thyroid gland
