Private event (covert behaviour)
Beh only observable to person who emits it.
Unverifiable to science
Public event (overt)
Beh observed by person other than one engaging in behaviour
Verifiable by science
Methodological behaviourism
Distinguished between subjective/qualitative (inner) and objective (outer) world
Radical behaviourism
Based on philosophy of pragmatism and rejects dualism
Private (thoughts, feelings) have environmental antecedents that are more useful for beh chg
Teleological (molar) behaviourism
Doesn’t make public-private or a subjective-objective distinction. Similar to radical in it rejects dualism and emphasis on function.
Cognitive distortions
- all or nothing
- over generalization
- discounting positives
- jumping to conclusions (mind-reading, fortune telling)
- magnification/minimization
- labeling
- personalization and blame
