Week 12- Cardiac Monitoring and Pulmonary Function Testing Flashcards
a type of portable EKG monitor
Holter Monitor
a machine that measures the air taken in and expelled from the lungs
spirometer
greatest volume of air that can be expelled when a person performs rapid, forced expiration
forced vital capacity
volume of the amount of air that can be forcibly exhaled
forced expiratory
For a stress test, an MA is responsible for
monitoring pts vital signs, pre testing instructions and watching for symptoms of syncope
Pretest spirometry rules
wear loose clothing, no large meals 2 hours before test, no smoking 1 hr before test, no bronchodilators for at least 6 hrs prior to test
What should a patient do when wearing a holter monitor?
continue with normal activities, document symptoms and activities in log, press buttom when even occurs
What should a patient NOT do when wearing a holter monitor?
do not move electrodes, do not disconnect wires, do not get it wet
How many electrodes need to be applied to patient for a holter monitor test?
5 electrodes
Peak flow meter tests measures
forced expiratory volume
test used to monitor lung function at home for patients that have chronic respiratory diseases (asthma)
peak flow meter
who determines peak flow zones for patient’s test?
The physician
Green zone & above on peak flow meter-
good control
(between) yellow zones on peak flow meter-
large airways are narrowing; patient should contact provider
red zone on peak flow meter-
medical emergency; call 911
