Week 11 - Winning Hearts and Minds Flashcards
What are some key recommendations in the forensic setting?
- double blind administration
- unbiased instruction
- single suspect lineups
Are there recommendations about sequential or simulatanous lineups? Why?
No. Because:
-some studies show that there is at some cost, compared to the previous studies saying that sequential lineups are at NO cost.
What did the Illinois report show?
That there were some confounded methodologies, non-random assignment, some responses in the simultaneous conditions not supported.
What is the effect of target absent base rates in “sequential superiority”?
As the base rates decrease, we have a sequential cost.
True hits vs guesses, cost of errors vs. misses, locking up bad guys vs improving ID reliability is a what issue?
Philosophical.
Why should we care about confidence?
Because everyone else does, it’s influential and informative.
Confidence is an index of ___:
memory quality
We have theoretical and empirical support ,so why not establish systematic protocols for collecting confidence?
- recognition is “all or nothing”
- EWs wouldn’t pick unless certain
- “less than certain” IDs have no value, easily undermined
Confidence is compelling, and informative, but:
- high confidence does not guarantee accuracy
- post identification feedback
- pre trial preparation
- CA relation for non choosers
What are recommendations for practise re confidence?
- confidence needs to be recorded
- attenuate non memorial influences on confidence
- scale must permit meaningful interpretation
Difference in tone can be problematic for confidence, why?
Because the tone can indicate a different confidence other than what they say.
What are the three summary points for scientific policy?
- rigorous experimental psychology can inform legal practise
- however, for impact you need clear recommendations, motivation in the CJS, compelling field data
- don’t be hasty
