Week 11 Flashcards
What are risk factors for voice disorders?
Classroom teaching/lecturing
Hearing loss in pt and significant others
Vocal athletes
Exercise
General extraneous muscle activity in head, neck, thorax
Chronic health problems such as acid reflux
Asthma and allergies
Medications and drugs
How is classroom teaching/lecturing a risk?
Prolonged loud, effortful phonation leading to fatigue
HYPO:
Hydration will thin mucus and reduce pressure
Fatigue will dimish with a decrease in vocal collisions
How is hearing loss a risk?
Excessive expiratory drive and medial compression
HYPO:
Decrease expiratory drive=easy manner of phonation
Audiology examination for amplification
How is being a vocal athlete a risk?
Demanding performance schedule and fatigue
Narrow supraglottal area and stiffened jaw/tongue to create voice
HYPO:
Vocal fatigue will dimish with decrease collision force
The release of muscles = efficient expression of voice
Modification of diet and increase hydration = better well being
How is exercise a risk?
Grunting during weight lifting leads to phonotrauma
HYPO:
Decreased laryngeal valving during exercise=reduce phono trauma
Hydration thins out mucus and reduces pressure
How is general extraneous muscle activity in HNT a risK/
Extraneous muscle activity stiffens and elevates thorax
HYPO:
Redux in thorax muscles stiffness=facilitate ab breathing
Decrease in muscle activity=easy manner of phonation
How is acid reflux a risk?
Reflux into pharynx and larynx irritated VF mucosa
HYPO:
Meds will alleviate irritation
iD and modify mealtimes, diet, portions, BMI, smoking and sleeping position to minimize reflux
What are the two types of acid reflux?
Laryngopharyngeal reflux (silent) - upright or day time pattern
- Rough voice, chronic cough/throat clearing, difficulty swallowing
- No heartburn or esophagitis
Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) - supine or nocturnal pattern
- Increase mucus, rough voice, chronic cough/throat clearing, difficulty swallowing
- Heartburn and esophagitis
How is asthma/allergies a risk?
May increase lung compliance and decrease elastic recoil
Irritate nasal, laryngeal and tracheal membranous lining
HYPO:
Balance of expiratory drive with VF adduction=easy manner of phonation
Use of ab breath control = manner of phonation
Avoid known allergies to decrease severity=ease phonation
How is use of medications/drugs a risk?
Dry and irritate VF mucosa and change the cognitive status
HYPO:
Alternate medication with fewer side effects = easier phonation
