What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the process of promoting the welfare of individuals and groups and protecting them from harm, putting controls and measure in place to do so
What are some different examples of abuse?
- physical abuse
- sexual abuse
- neglect
- bullying
- extremist views leading to terrorism
Define sexual abuse
Involves the forcing or enticing a person to take part in sexual activity against their wishes, or for which they are not able to consent
What are the different types of neglect?
-fail to care for properly
- the state of being uncared for
- self neglect
Define human trafficking
The movement of a person from one place to another into conditions of exploitation, using deception, coercion, the abuse of power or the abuse of someone’s vulnerability
Define extremist views/radicalisation
The process by which a person comes to support terrorism and extremist ideologies associated with terrorist groups
Define the Care Act 2014
Safeguarding adults means protecting a person’s right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect
What are the 4 main aims if safeguarding?
- prevent harm and reduce risk of abuse
- safeguard individuals while supporting them to make their own choices
- promote positive outcomes
- raise public awareness, aiding healthcare professionals to identify neglect
What are some responsibilties of a clinician?
- ensure safety and wellbeing
- maintain any evidence
- make a written report of what you have been told
- follow procedures for reporting incidents/risls
- establish patients wishes
- inform person you are required to share info and explain why
What are the 6 key principles that underpin adult safeguarding?
- empowerment
- prevention
- proportionally

Define empowerment
Personalisation and presumption of person-led decisions and informed consent

It is better to take action before harm occurs

The least intrusive response appropriate to the risk presented

What are the factors of and adult at risk?
- aged 18+
- may need community care services
- reason of mental health or disability
- unable to protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation
