Indian (native american) religion for the Puritan Settlers
Puritan settlers saw native American religion as witchcraft and satanic inversion. They claim that the devil prescribes his law and persuades them that darkness is light and it good. This can be dated since before the war of independence
Regeneration
Notion by Schaff and Bushnell in 1800s which was both shared in the North and South of America. It can be followed back to the colonial era and believed in the baptism of blood would lead to a rebirth.
Freedom (in American Culture)
Sounded from the War of Independence it encompasses the idea of 4 freedoms, freedom of speech, worship, want, and fear. So worship shows why violence took place in the name of god.
Old Wolrd
Apparent during the revolutionary era of America, the Old World contained despotism and debauchery. Methodists claimed that the Old World was filled with Latin tyranny and Catholicism. The old world was the Name for England
Universalism
is essentially Christian idea of a normative message directed to the world at large. It came from the fateful alloy of Rome’s sense of its divinely willed imperial destiny. Universalism also makes possible a world-sized, conflict in the service of sacred ideals
Last World Empire
The idea of the last empire was Jewish and Christian, developed around the visions interpreted by the Prophet David. This was a vision which signified four successive world empires and their supersession by a kingdom willed by God which would stand into eternity. Interpretations differ whether the Kingdom would already exist in this age or only after Christ’s return in glory or after the last judgement.
Past and Future
: This is the concept that God judged History and would reveal his judgement in the future so therefore the future became the judge of the present, and those who understand the future (God’s will) are judges alongside it. The Past is the text book of tyrants and the Future is the Bible of the Free
Majority and minority
Concept contended by Captain Brown. The righteous minority he represented could take up arms against any institution that did not uphold justice. He believed minority and majority were relative and absolute terms. But according to Phillips there was a paradox as in God’s world there are no majorities, no minorities; one man, on God’s side is a majority. (1800s)
Left Behind series
This was an evangelical fiction by La Hayes, which was highly popular in the US in the 1950s. Many scholars of holy war profit from these studies of its American readership. It deals with the concept of conversion, and recognising Christ with the formulaic expression of one’s desire to have him enter ones life
Modes of reading Evangelical fiction
1/10th of the 1700 reviews used the books as tolls for evangelization. People stated that these readings had influenced their understanding of various passages of the Bible, that these were not just stories but scriptural readings, they thought them prophetic.
