Components of the Therapeutic Relationship (5)

Fiduciary relationship
One in which a person with a certain level of knowledge and abilities accepts the trust and confidence of another person to act in their best interest
Components of Therapeutic Communication (5)
- Introducing self, role, expectations
- Giving the client time to explain themselves
- Verbal/non-verbal
- Listening to, understanding, respecting values and care preferences
- Refraining from self-disclosure unless it meets a specific, identified, therapeutic need

The limits that allow a client and nurse to engage in a therapeutic relationship; within these boundaries, a safe relational space is created
Boundary Crossings
Brief excursions across boundaries, with a return to established professional limits
Relationship changes from therapeutic to personal; misuse of power within the relationship to meet the nurse’s rather than the client’s need
May be trivial and not harmful but has potential to progress to a violation if increase in frequency, intensity.
