Class
Social hierarchies based on economic wealth
Possible to change with acquisition of: education, achievement, and wealth.
Caste
Hierarchical social system assigned at birth, typically arranged from “purest” to “least pure”
Not possible to change status-ascribed status
Race
Socially defined based on phenotypical characteristics
Used for exclusion/inclusion, violence, persecution, or solidarity
Ethnicity
Socially defined by culture (language, religion, or dress)
Can be malleable; can be self-ascribed
How are race and ethnicity related?
They are both cultural creations (not biological)
Race is loosely based on physical characteristics
-within your race you have certain ethnicities (social groups) based on culture
Nationalism
A sense of identification with and loyalty to your nation-state
Nation
A group of people believed to share history, culture, language, and “physical substance”
Ex:Cherokee nation, Lakota nation
Nation-state
Political entity in which national identity and political territory coincide
A state that has chosen to adopt and endorse a specific cultural group associated with it
Difference between a nation and a nation-state?
Nations are a group sharing things like culture, history, and language.
Nation-states are a political entity.
States typically have many nations within them
They both have many ethnicities in them
What are some consequences of nationalism?
Disenfranchisement
-unequal access to things like: voting rights, property laws, and economic ability
Transformist hegemony
- a nationalist program to define nationality in a way that preserves the cultural domination of the ruling group
- included enough cultural feature from other groups to ensure their loyalty
Globalization
Local conditions are reshaped by powerful global forces on a constantly intensifying scale
Ex:our countries economic problems had an effect on the global market
Positive effects of globalization?
Increases access to important things through trading networks and the internet. (Food, News, media, information, goods, raw materials, etc.)
Good and bad
Cultural hybridity
-cultural destabilization and mixing
Negative effects of globalization?
Domination by one culture
-destruction of local music, technology, dress, and food
Western cultural imperialism
- bringing western culture into other like: blue jeans, cell phones, McDonald’s, Coca Cola
- seen as dooming the world to uniformity
Conflict and friction
Cultural imperialism
One culture can dominate others which can lead to the destruction of one culture and replacement by the dominant culture.
Difference between multiculturalism and cultural imperialism?
Multiculturalism is the idea that different cultures can exist and thrive in the same region without one thinking they are better than the others.
In cultural imperialism there can only be one dominating culture.
