Q

Emotion: physiology

Brain basis of appraisals: AMYGDALA

A

Amygdala is ideally situated to influence cognitive functions in reaction to emotional stimuli due to its extensive connectivity with other brain regions

●Amygdala is generally engaged in the perception & processing of emotions

●Amygdala is especially sensitive to the processing of FEAR

AMYGDALA – FEAR – FACES – EYES

C. Patient SM - complete bilateral amygdala lesions and is impaired in recognizing fear

A. Using sparsely revealed faces to identify face areas used during emotion judgment, controls exhibited much greater use of the eyes than SM.

B. While looking at whole faces, SM exhibited abnormal face gaze making far fewer fixations to the eyes than did controls.

D. When SM was instructed to look at the eyes (d, “SM eyes”) in a whole face, she could do this, resulting in a remarkable recovery in ability to recognize the facial expression of fear compared to her accuracy prior to this instruction (d, “SM free”).

AVOID PAIN: periventricular system (PVS) - Hypothalamus

●When the organism faces a major stressor, PVS activates the sympathetic nervous system which orchestrates the fight-or-flight response
BAS: Behavioral Activation System

●It dilates the bronchi and the pupils, accelerates heart rate & respiration, increases perspiration & arterial blood pressure, but reduces digestive activity.
