Week 1 - Intro to the topic Flashcards
Patient A performs badly on task X and badly on task Y
Association
Patient A performs badly on task X but is unimpaired on task Y
Single Dissociation
Patient A performs badly on task X but is unimpaired on task Y. Patient B is the opposite.
Double Dissociation
Modularity
Cognitive systems have multiple modules
Operate fairly independently
Domain specific
Functional localisation - modules map onto different anatomical regions
Functional specialisation- brain regions for specific functions
Higher order processes are less modular
Universality
Functional architecture of cognitive system is invariant in humans
Therefore we can use brain damaged patients to infer normal brain functioning
Subtractivity
Brain injury cannot introduce new modules only impair them or their pathways of communication
An example of a double Dissociation
Broca’s area - speech production
Wernicke’s area - speech comprehension
