Week 10: Business Process Management Flashcards
What is a business Process?
A network of activities, resources, facilities and information that interact to perform some business function
What is business process management (BPM)
Systematic process of creating, assessing and altering business processes.
What does a business process do?
It transforms an input into a more valuable output. E.g. Loan approval
What are the 4 stages of the BPM cycle?
1 - Create a model of the process
2 - Create system components (uses 5 elements of IS: hardware, software…)
3 - Implement processes
4 - Assess results
What do functional processes involve?
Activities within a single department or function
Why is BPM easier to accomplish with functional processes?
A single department manager has authority over all activities and resources assigned to them. Therefore they have the power to change things
What is the problem with functional processes?
They are isolated from other departments rather than working together (leads to inefficiency)
What does CRM stand for?
Customer Relationship Management
What is CRM?
A process that integrates activities of several departments to eliminate isolated systems/data
What are inter-organisational processes?
Business processes that cross organisational boundaries
What is an example of a inter-organisational process?
- Processing credit card transactions
- Shipping goods
- Supply chain management
Why are inter-organisational processes more complex than functional or cross functional systems?
Because they not only involve different managers, but also different business owners
By what 2 ways are process problems solved?
- By adding/removing resources
- By altering how the tasks are completed
