Week 1 Terms Flashcards
Test
toward or near the surface of the body
Superficial
Test
away from the surface of the body.
Deep
Test
on the same side
Ipsilateral
Test
opposite side of the body
Contralateral
Test
Bending of 2 adjacent body segments so that the surfaces are brought together
Flexion
Test
straightening of 2 adjacent body segments so that the surfaces are moved apart
Extension
Test
Rotation of a body segment so that the anterior surface faces toward the midline of the body (occurs around the longitudinal axis)
Internal (Medial) Rotation
Test
Rotation of a body segment so that the anterior surface faces away from the midline of the body (occurs around the longitudinal axis)
External (Lateral) Rotation
Test
Combination of flexion, abduction, extension and adduction
Circumduction
Test
lateral movement of the shoulder in a horizontal plane with the shoulder at 90 degrees
Horizontal Abduction
Test
medial movement of the shoulder in the horizontal plane the shoulder at 90 degrees
Horizontal Adduction
Test
lateral movement of the hand at the wrist
Radial Deviation (abduction)
Test
medial movement of the hand at the wrist
Ulnar Deviation (adduction)
Test
movement of the dorsum of the foot away from the anterior aspect of the leg at the ankle (talocrual joint)
Plantarflexion
Test
movement of the dorsum of the foot toward the anterior aspect of the leg at the ankle (talocrual joint)
Dorsiflexion
Test
movement of the foot so that the heel moves medially at the intertarsal joints (subtalar + tranverse tarsal joints) “ankle” joint
Inversion
Test
movement of the foot so the heel moves laterally at the intertarsal joints (subtalar + transverse tarsal joints) “ankle” joint
Eversion
Test
movement of the thumb at the carpometacarpal joint that allows the pad of the thumb to contact the pads of the fingers
Opposition
Test
opposite movement of opposition
Reposition
Test
forward movement of the head. Typically used to describe scapular movement
Protraction
Test
backward movement of the head. Typically used to describe scapular movement
Retraction
Test
superior movement of the scapula. SC elevation and AC downward rotation
Elevation of the scapula
Test
inferior movement of the scapula. SC depression and AC upward rotation
Depression of the scapula
Test
movement of the medial border of the scapula anterolateral. SC protraction and AC internal rotation
Protraction of the scapula
Test
movement of the medial border of the scapula posteromedial. SC retraction and AC external rotation
Retraction of the scapula
Test
superior movement of the glenoid cavity with superior and lateral movement of the inferior angle. SC elevation and AC upward rotation
Upward Rotation of the scapula
Test
inferior movement of the glenoid cavity with inferior and medial movement of the inferior angle. SC depression and AC downward rotation
Downward Rotation of the scapula
