Week 1 - Social Perception Flashcards
What is the definition of perception?
The process by which the brain interprets sensory information to understand the world around us
What are the key features of perception?
- Sensory information: Raw input from our senses (e.g. visual information, auditory information etc.)
- Interpretation: How the brain makes sense of this information
What is the defintion of Social Perception?
The process by which the brain interprets social information to understand other people and their behaviours
What are the key features of Social Perception?
- Social information: Raw input from action observation
- Interpretation: How the brain makes sense of this information
Perceptual bias / Visual Illusions?
PART 1: Percseptual Illusions
What are the Illusions of Motion: Forward displacement?
- Memory for the final position of a moving target is displaced forwards in the direction of motion
- The displacement reflects the implied momentum of the target
- Freyd and Finke (1984) were the first to refer to this illusion as The Representational Momentum Effect
What are factors of Representational Momentum (Hubbard, 2005) ?
- Representational Gravity
- Representational Friction
PART 2: Theories
What is ‘‘Predictive Processing Account’’ ?
- Perception is a process of predicting sensory input rather than passively recieving it
- The brain uses past experiences and prior knowledge to generate predictions about the sensory input it will receive
- Incoming sesnory information is then compared to predictions to see if they match, which can create perceptual biases
- Prediction errors are sent back up to revise future predictions
What are benefits of predictive biases?
- We are not just passive beings
- The world is interactive
PART 3: Social Preception
What are illusions in social perception?
Expectations about of people’s intentions and actions can bias perception of their behavoiur
