define “nutrients”
substances from food that are vital for growth and maintenance of a healthy body throughout life
define “diet”
the foods and beverages a person eats and drinks daily
define “nutrition”
study of nutrients in foods and their actions within the body
what causes chronic diseases?
poor diet and less active profile
what are some threatening chronic diseases?
obesity, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some cancers
what are the characteristics of nutrients?
- has a specific biological function
- absence will cause a decline in human biological function
- reintroduction before permanent damage occurs will restore the otherwise impaired biological function
what are examples of macronutrients?
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids
what are examples of micronutrients?
vitamins and minerals
what is the kcal/g of carbo, proteins, fats?
carbo - 4
proteins - 4
fats - 9
why does the body need food energy?
- build new compounds
- perform muscular movement
- promote nerve transmission
- maintain ion balance within cells
what is the AMDR percentage for carbo, protein, fats?
carbo -> 45 - 65%
protein -> 10 - 35%
fats -> 20 - 35%
how to calculate food energy?
(carbo x4) + (protein x4) + (fats x9)
what are empty calories?
- calories from solid fats &/or added sugar
what does food with empty calories do?
supply energy but few or no other nutrients
