Week 1 - Neuro Intro Flashcards
What kind of neurons reside in the dorsal/posterior horn (sensory horn) of the spinal cord?
Multipolar neurons
What do you call multipolar neurons in the dorsal/posterior horn (sensory horn) that send their axons to multipolar neurons in the ventral/anterior horn (motor horn)?
Interneurons
What kind of neurons reside in the Lateral horn (intermediolateral cell column) of the spinal cord?
The preganglionic cell bodies of multipolar neurons of the autonomic nervous system.
(**only thoracic/upper lumbar regions)
What kind of neurons reside in the ventral/anterior horn (motor horn) of the spinal cord?
- Alpha motor neurons (multi-polar)
- a.k.a. lower motor neurons
- Gamma motor neurons (multi-polar)
What do Alpha motor neuron axons innervate?
Extrafusal skeletal muscle fibers/cells
What do Gamma motor neurons innervate?
Intrafusal muscle fibers/cells of the
neuromuscular spindle
What is located in the dorsal column/funiculus of the spinal cord?
Ascending axons from sensory nerve cell processes (axons) whose cell bodies are located in dorsal root ganglia.
What is located in the lateral column/funiculus?
- Ascending sensory nerve fibers
- cell bodies located in dorsal horn
- Descending motor nerve fibers
- cell bodies in brain stem/cerebrum
What is located in the ventral column/funiculus?
- Ascending sensory nerve fibers
- cell bodies in dorsal horn
- Descending motor nerve fibers
- cell bodies in brain stem & cerebrum
