Week 1: Introduction; Ethical Practice in Research; Learning Domains Flashcards
What is research? (3 points)
- Creative and systematic work undertaken in order to increase the stock knowledge
- Basically, research is the creation of new information that is used to inform decision making
- In its simplest forms, it can be divided into two major categories: measurement and evaluation
Define measurement (1 point)
The process of collecting data (information) on the property or attribute of interest.
Define evaluation (1 point)
The process of interpreting the collected measurement and determining some worth or value.
Describe the process of informed decision making
- Measure: collect and organize data (information)
- Evaluate: analyze and report on the data (information)
- Decide: analyze and report on the data (information)
- Act: act to improve/enhance
What is ethics? (2 points)
- Norms for conduct that distinguish between right and wrong
- Much more than “just common sense”
List and describe the four (4) major reasons as to why ethics are promoted in research (14 points)
- Promote the aims of research
- Knowledge
- Truth
- Avoidance of error - Research involves collaboration between people / institutions. Ethics promotes values that underpin collaboration
- Trust
- Accountability
- Mutual respect - Ethical norms help ensure researchers are held accountable to the public.
- Policies on research misconduct
- Conflicts of interest
- Protection for subjects (animal and human) - Public support for research
- Research is more likely to be funded if the quality and integrity can be trusted
What is copyright? (2 points)
- A set of exclusive rights that is granted to a creator of a work of original authorship.
- Limits how others can use the work
List the four (4) learning domains
- Health related physical fitness domain
- Psychomotor domain
- Cognitive domain
- Affective domain
What are some aspects of health/fitness that we can improve? (5 points)
1: Body composition
2: Cardiovascular endurance
3: Muscle endurance
4: Muscular strength
5: Flexibility
Identify the practical relevance of the health related physical fitness domain within Exercise Science and Sport Management (7 points)
Sport management:
1: Assess the effectiveness of trainer/coach in your fitness facility or club and the programs they administer.
2: Athlete selection – these components are often used by sporting organisations to determine athlete selection.
Exercise science
1. Set training level and program for client
2. test effectiveness of training program; equipment; supplement.
3. Determine whether athlete fit to play.
Describe the assessment in health related physical fitness (9 points)
- Typically quantitative measures (information in number form):
1. Body composition- Densitometry
- Skin fold
- Flexibility
- No general measure (goniometer)
- Cadiorespiratory fitness
- VO2 max
- 1.6km run; 12min run; 20m shuttle run
Describe psychomotor domain (4 points)
- Reflexive movements, fundamental locomotors movement patterns and skilled movements
- Balance; speed; agility; coordination; power; reaction time
- Specialised skills needed in particular sports
- The ability to shoot free throws in basketball; putt a golf ball; or serve a tennis ball
Identify the practical relevance of the psychomotor domain within Exercise Science and Sport Management (11 points)
Sport management:
1. Increasing participation in your sport.
2. Promoting an active lifestyle.
Exercise science
1. Athletic performance
- Diagnose injury
- Determine the effectiveness of a training program
- Evaluate performance, talent identification
- Motivation for athletes
- Demonstrate measurable improvements
- Compare to elite performer results
Describe the assessment in psychomotor domain (12 points)
- Tend to be quantitative measures:
- E.g. time; accuracy; successful attempts; element present or not present
- General motor ability tests:
- “Agility” run
- Illinois agility run
- Measuring balance
- Stork stand (static ability)
- Balance beam walk (dynamic ability)
- Sport specific testing:
- Softball throw for distance
- Basketball free throws
- Football kicking for distance
Describe cognitive domain (17 points)
- Thinking; recognising; memorising; recalling
- Typically linked to ‘Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives’
- Goal of Bloom’s Taxonomy is to progress from lower order thinking skills to higher order thinking skills
- Original Order (from lowest to highest)
- Knowledge
- Comprehension
- Application
- Analysis
- Synthesis
- Evaluation
- Revised Order (from lowest to highest)
- Remembering
- Understanding
- Applying
- Analyzing
- Evaluating
- Creating
