week 1 - intro to anatomy, membranes and body fluids Flashcards
What is anatomy?
the study of body functions (biochemical, physical, mechanical)
what is the difference between anatomy and physiology?
anatomy deals with the location and structure of a body part, whereas physiology deals with the function of a body part.
What is homeostasis?
the process by which a nearly stable environment is maintained in the body so that cellular functions can continue at maximum efficiency
what are some features of a plasma membrane?
- highly selective permeability
- lots of transport proteins and pumps for uptake + removal of substances
- vital for regulation of intracellular environment
what is the phospholipid bilayer itself (without transport proteins) impermeable to?
ions and polar molecules
how is permeability provided in the phospholipid bilayer?
channel proteins
carrier proteins
pumps (e.g. Na+ / K+ pump)
what are the 3 types of carrier protein?
- facilitator (uniport) - transports one ion at a time - pretty boring
- cotransporter (symport) - can transport two different ion species at one time
- exchanger (antiport) - has to exchange ions to maintain electrical neutrality - e.g. will remove an Na+ ion from cell but will intake a H+ ion - no net change in charge
