WEEK 1 INTRO Flashcards
Science of dosage form design
➢ Discipline in pharmacy that deals with all the features of the process of turning a new chemical entity into a medication able to be safely and effectively used by patients in the community.
PHARMACEUTICS
Is an agent intended for use in the
diagnosis, mitigation, treatment,
cure or prevention of disease in
humans or in other animals. (FDC Act 1938)
DRUG
Is the* physical form of a dose of a chemical compound used as a drug
or medication intended for
administration or consumption.
➢ “a form by which drug molecules are delivered to sites of action within the body”
PHARMACEUTICAL DOSAGE FORM
Method or process of administering a pharmaceutical compound to achieve a therapeutic effect in humans or in animals.
➢ Focus on the synthesis of target
therapy.
EXAMPLES:
❖ Transdermal Drug Delivery System
❖ Topical Drug Delivery System
DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM
Is the path by which a drug is brought into contact with the body.
➢ A substance must be transported from the site of entry to the part of the body where its action is desired to
take place.
DRUG DELIVERY ROUTE
SELECTION OF THE ROUTE DEPENDS
ON 3 FACTORS:
❖ Effect Desired
❖ Type of Disease
❖ Type of Product
under the tongue
Sublingual
inhalation through
mouth
Inhalation
mouth
ORAL
rectum
RECTAL
skin (internal
or direct to the system circulation)
TRANSDERMAL PATCH
skin (external or outer
layer)
TOPICAL
intravenous (IV),
intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous
(SC)
**Parenteral **
these are drugs that causes mydriasis (dilation of pupils)
e.,g: epinephrine and phenylephrine
MYDRIATIC DRUGS
these are drugs that causes miosis (constriction of the pupils)
e.,g: carbachol
MYOTIC DRUGS
induces vomiting
e.,g: cupric sulfate, epicac syrup
EMETICS
induce diuresis
e.,g: furosemide
DIURETICS
prevents vomiting
e.,g; domperidone, metoclopramide, meclizine
ANTI-EMETICS
respiratory tract fluid, it helps thin the secretions in your airway and loosen up mucus.
e.,g: guaifenesin
EXPECTORANTS
to stimulate or facilitate evacuation of the bowels
e.,g: bisacodyl (dulcolax)
CATHARTICS/LAXATIVE
give an example of transdermal patch
- nitroglycerin patch
- scopolamine patch
nitroglycerin- for angina pectoris
scopolamine- motion sickness
what are the most effective routes of
administration?
oral, rectal,
parenteral, topical
provide a specific example of a drug classified as an emetic that is used in emergency situations to induce vomiting and help expel poisons from the patient’s system?
Ipecac syrup
Provide a specific example of a medication currently available on the market that is formulated as soft gel capsule
Ibuprofen
what dosage form is meclizine or Bonamine 25 mg available in? be specific.
Chewable tablet
what is the term used to describe the rate at which a drug is taken up and enters the bloodstream after it is administered?
Absorption rate
what is the term used to describe the length of time that a drug remains effective and produces its therapeutic effects in the body after administration?
Duration of action
