Week 1 - Hip, anterior and medial thigh Flashcards
What 3 bones up make up the hip?
Ischium, pubis and ilium
How do the pelvis and the femur articulate with one another? What type of joint is the hip joint?
the head of the femur articulates with the acetabulum of the pelvis = makes hip stable.
- Hip joint is a ball and socket synovial joint.
What is the role of the anterior thigh muscles?
flex the hip and extend the leg/knee
Role of the lateral thigh and some gluteal muscles?
ABduct the thigh.
What is the role of the posterior thigh muscles?
To extend the thigh muscles and flex the leg/knee
Role of the medial compartment/ thigh muscles?
ADDuct the thigh.
What 2 muscles is the illiopsoas made up of?
What is the fucntion of illiopsoas?
Where do the 2 muscles originate from?
What is the insertion of the iliopsoas?
What is the innervation of each of the 2 muscles which make up illiopsoas?
the psoas major and iliacus.
- it is for flexion of the thigh and the hip joint.
- psoas major originates from = lumbar vertebrae.
- illiacus originates from = iliac fossa of the pelvis
- Insertion of illiopsoas = onto the lesser trochanter of the femur (but bellies lie in the abdomen and pelvis).
- Innervation: The illiopsoas: Psoas major is innervated by the anterior rami L1-3
What nerve innervates the anterior compartment of the thigh?
The FEMORAL nerve innervates the anterior compartment of the thigh (originates from lumbar segment of the spine).
What are the 4 main muscles of the anterior thigh which make up the quadriceps?
RLIM:
Rectus femoris,
Vastus lateralis
Vastus intermedialis
Vastus medialis
Innervated by femoral nerve.
Vastus lateralis - origin, insertion and action?
O = greater trochanter and linea aspera of femur.
Insertion = Quadriceps femoris tendon
Action = extends leg at knee joint.
Vastus Intermedius - origin, insertion and action?
Origin = anteriolateral surface of femur
Insertion = Quadriceps femoral tendon
Action = Extension of leg at knee joint
Vastus medialis - origin, insertion and action?
Origin = from intertrochanteric line and medial lip of the linea and linea aspera of femur.
Insertion: quadriceps femoral tendon
Action: Extends leg at knee joint
Rectus femoris - origin, insertion and action?
Origin: ASIS - anterior inferior iliac spine.
insertion = Quadriceps femoris tendon.
Action = Extension of leg at the knee, and flexion of the hip joint.
Sartorius - origin, insertion and action?
Origin: ASIS -anterior surface of inferior iliac spine
Insertion: tibial tuberosity
Action = flexes leg at knee joint and flexes thigh at hip. At the hip joint, it is a flexor, abductor and lateral rotator. At the knee joint, it is also a flexor.
