Week 1 DALY Flashcards
What is Daly?
measure used to calculate the overall burden the specified diseases have on a community/population; helpful to identify and prioritise which disease causes the most harm
How to calculate Daly?
YLD (years lived with disability) + YLL (years life lost)
What are the factors that threaten life expectancy and what are they divided by?
Structural factors (developing countries): diseases, bad housing, malnutrition and child mortality
Lifestyle factors (developed countries): smoking, substance abuse, sleep and fitness
What are the 3 goals of health comm
1) to motivate people’s decisions
2) to change behaviour
3) to increase understanding of health-related issues
What are some key characteristics of Health Comm
1) multidisciplinary, uses different theoretical frameworks for different areas
2)people-centered
3)evidence-based
What is in the health comm environment?
1) communities and other key groups
2) political environment
3) social environment
4) recommended health or social behaviour/produce
What is in the health comm cycle?
3 continuous stages: planning, implementation and monitoring, evaluation, feedback and refinement
What is global burden of disease (GBD)?
project that estimates the number of healthy life years lost globally; it is the sum of mortality and morbidity (the prevalent diseases) and can be measured by DALYs
