What does Inspiration say about authorship?
Authorship is both divine and human.
God is primary, man is secondary author.
Tell how the Primary Author inspired
Through the Holy Spirit’s initiative, prompting, enlightenment, and superintendence the human writer did his work.
What is Revelation?
God directly imparting truth to a mind
What is Inspiration?
The divine influence that secures the accurate transference into human language by a speaker or writer, to be communicated to other men.
What is Illumination?
That influence of the Holy Spirit under which all children of God receive, discern, and feed upon the truth communicated to them.
How would you sketch these?
God inspires the writer, who writes. That written word is
God’s revelation. The Holy Spirit works in the mind of a Christian who is reading Scripture to understand it.
What is an example of revelation that is not inspired?
–Hearers of Sermon on the Mount heard verbal revelation but were not inspired to write it down. We receive it by Matthew’s written revelation–he had divine authority.
–In Acts, Luke quotes a letter from Claudias Lysias. Luke was inspired but Claudias Lysias was not.
–Joseph heard a warning to flee to Egypt but he was not inspired to write it down.
“God told me”
Often is God’s prompting working on a spiritual truth already gained by Bible reading
Concurrence
God and the human author together.
E.g. God accesses all of Paul’s background, education, etc.
See 1 Cor. 2:9ff
What concepts do people come up with in formulating a theory of Inspiration?
- -Mechanical/dictation
- -Dynamic–the Bible “contains” the Word of God. (Superintended, Elevated, Directed, or Suggested)
- -Intuition or Natural inspiration
- -Illumination or Universal Christian Inspiration “I just know” (Schleiermacher)
- -Plenary Verbal Inspiration: Full, Verbal (spoken intending for it to be understood)
