week 1 Flashcards
which 3 buldges develop in week 4? (primary vesicles)
prosencephalon
mesencephalon
rhombocephalon
which area of devloping brain is the “crossroad”?
diencephalon
what is an astrocyte?
star shapes, long processes, help to maintain BBB, no connective tissue
what are oligodendrocytes?
produce myelin in the CNS but not in the PNS (done by schwann cells)
what is the internal capsule?
large white matter projection projecting down to brainstem, importnat clinically
it connects left to right (not up and down)
what are glial cells?
support cells - they don’t produce electrical impulses, but maintain homeostasis, form myelin, and provide support and protection for neurons
is white matter myelinated or not?
it is
what are the 2 cerebral hemispheres separated by?
medial longitudinal fissure
what are the 2 cerebral hemispheres joined together by at the bottom?
corpus callosum, a broad band of commissural fibres
how is the spinal cord anchored to the dura matter?
denticulate ligaments
what is the bottom of the spinal cord called?
conus medullaris
what does the pia matter continue as once the spinal cord finishes?
connective tissue called filum terminale
where is the conus medullaris found?
L1-L2
where does the subarachnoid space finish?
S2-3
