Opioid adverse effects
constipation, respiratory depression (more common in long acting), itching, dizziness, sedation
Opioid drug interactions
benzos, CNS depressants, muscle relaxers
Patient counseling key point
DO NOT cut or crush controlled release (morphine sulfate)
Fentanyl patch
cannot be cut, can be used over 72 hours, discontinue all ER opioid medications while on the patch
Tramadol
Ultram, Ultracet (with acetaminophen) - partial opioid analgesic
