What isn’t effective communication?
Hearing but not listening, listening while making judgements - stereotyping, filtering, interrupting and inappropriate advice giving
A simple model of communication includes?
Sender, receiver, message/feedback, noise
Who is the sender?
The person who encodes the message for delivery
Who is the receiver?
The person who decodes the message
What is the message?
The information that is encoded during an interaction
What is noise?
Physical or psychological interference that can impact on how accurately a message is sent or received
What is context
The overarching physical or psychological environment that guides how a message with be interpreted
The influence of context on the meaning of a message relates to the fact that words have two meanings ….
Denotative and connotative
What is a denotative meaning
The objective, dictionary definition of a word. D = Dictionary
What is a connotative meaning?
The subjective meaning of a word, impacted upon by personality, past experience, context or personal circumstances
What is other-oriented?
Sharing responsibility for the conversation but your focus is on the other person not on your own needs or wants
What is active listening?
A form of listening in which the listening makes verbal and non-verbal contributions to the conversation with the intention of understanding the speaker’s message
What is evaluative (judgmental) listening
Listen to what someone has to say but will do so while making judgements about that person and the way that person is proceeding with the topic of the conversation
What is stereotyping?
Abbreviated or simplified perceptions of people that are often misleading or inaccurate
What is filtering?
Unconscious blocking of parts of a message to only process information that conforms to your point of view, potentially resulting in biased listening
