Defining your topic of interest
- Be as specific as possible
- Gather info on specific aspects of the topic i.e. who is relevant, what their experience is, the specific context i.e. home/clinic and the outcome

-The entire group of people that you are studying
- Be as specific as possible
-i.e. children ages 2-7

-The strategy, procedure or treatment being studied
- i.e. a psychological approach or new medication

- The alternative to the intervention being studied
- i.e. medication vs placebo
Outcome
- What is being measured/ expected outcomes
- i.e. improvement in QQL scores after an exercise program
To operationalise
Define a topic in a way that the topic we want to study can be observed, measured or applied
Boolean Operators
-Allow us to filter words such as and, or and not to to include or exclude certain subsets of sources
- Enable us to make our search both comprehensive and specific
Knowing how to read
- Read abstract
- Skim the introduction and discussion
- Read carefully through the methods and the results
- Re-read and take notes
Selective Reading
Read the parts that are particularly relevant to your purpose
Active Reading
Physically; Highlight, underline and write notes
Intellectually; Ask questions in response to certain things that you read, look up unfamiliar words or phrases
Critical Reading
- Is the evidence being cited? Is the citation from a specific scientific journal
- Categorical statements should make you hesitant
