Week 1 Flashcards
Define research
- a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge
- the collection and analysis of information to increase our understanding of a topic or issue
Define scientific method
a structured, orderly process for conducting a research study
Basic Research
studies driven by the discovery of new knowledge that has no immediate application
Applied Research
studies driven by a desire to find a solution for an immediate problem
Translational Research
studies in which results of basic research are subsequently investigated in humans
Parts of a Manuscript
Abstract
concise summary of a paper that appears before the beginning of the paper
Parts of a Manuscript
Introduction
beginning section of a paper that introduces the topic and explains the rationale
Parts of a Manuscript
Methods
section that presents detailed description of all preocedures used in the study
Parts of a Manuscript
Results
section of paper that objectively presents the findings of the study
Parts of a Manuscript
Discussion
section in which authors provide interpretations related to findings in the study
Parts of a Manuscript
Conclusion
concise list of conclusions that be directly drawn from the findings and either confirm or fail to confirm the original hyptohesis
Quantitative Research
- collects numerical data
- describes conditions and relationships among different variable
- investigates causal relationships
Qualititative Research
- collects non-numerical data (interview, audiotapes, videotapes)
- usually does not involve formulating and testing specific hypothesis
Experimental Research
- involves manipulation of independent variables and measuring its effects
- attempts to establish cause-effect relationship
Observational Research
- provides useful description of the characteristics, distribution, and relationship of variables in an individual or population
- often based in epidemiologic principles providing essential measures of association
