Week 1 Flashcards
Name the two types of cells
Procaryotic, eucaryotic
Describe the eucaryotic cell
Has nucleus, organelles and cytoskeleton, has introns
Describe the procaryotic cell
No nucleus, organelles or cytoskeleton or introns
Compound microscope
Has objective and ocular lenses
Use of antibodies
To stain for microscopy
Nucleus function
Surrounded by double membrane, linked to endoplasmic reticulum.
Mitochondrion function
Generates energy from food, contains its own dna and reproduces by splitting in two
Chloroplast function
Captures energy from light, contains its own DNA, site of photosynthesis
Endoplasmic reticulum function
Produces new membranes and proteins for synthesis
Golgi apparatus function
Sorting and packing proteins and lipids, interacts with ER, sorts material for delivery
Lysosomes function
Breaks down unwanted material, has a high PH, full of enzymes which destroy material
Cytosol/Cytoplasm function
Hosts chemical reactions + cells, is a fluid
cytoplasm
Cell component in membrane, outside layer of membrane
Peroxisomes
Carries out oxidative reactions
Plasma membrane
Provides protection for the cell
