Weathering Types Flashcards
What is freeze thaw and what type of weathering
Mechanical weathering
Water enters cracks.
Temperature drops and ice is formed, expanding the crack.
Biological weathering example
Plant roots can get into small cracks in the rock.
As the roots grow, the cracks become larger.
This causes small pieces of rock to break away.
Chemical weathering -what is acid rain
Rainwater and seawater can be a weak acid. If a coastline is made up of rocks such as limestone or chalk, over time they can become dissolved by the acid in the water.
Mass movement- rockfall, what is it
Rocks breakaway from the cliff often due to free thaw
What is mass movement?
The downward movement of weathered material and rock under the influence of gravity
Mass movement, what is landslide?
When blocks of rock slide downhill
Mass movement, what is mudflow?
Soil and weak rock flows downhill
