Erosion And Transport Flashcards
Transportation methods
The movement of material by suspension, solution, traction and saltation.
Erosion
the wearing away of rock along the coastline.
Hydraulic action
the sheer power of the waves as they smash against the cliff
Deposition
When the sea loses energy, it drops the sand, rock particles and pebbles it has been carrying.
Weathering
process which causes the breakdown of rocks and minerals by chemical, biological or physical agents
Attrition
When rocks that the river is carrying knock against each other. They break apart to become smaller and more rounded.
Solution
Solution - When the water dissolves certain types of rocks, eg limestone.
Abrasion
when rocks and other materials carried by the sea are picked up by strong waves and thrown against the coastline causing more material to be broken off
Saltation
the bouncing of sand grains as they are picked up, carried along, and dropped repeatedly by flowing water
Suspension
- lighter sediment is suspended (carried) within the water, most commonly near the mouth of the river.
Traction
rolling or dragging of large grains along the shore,
