Weathering and Mass Movement Processes Flashcards
What are the 3 types of weathering?
chemical
biological
mechanical
give an example of mechanical weathering?
freeze-thaw (water gets into rocks, expands and then melts, weakening the rock)
Give an example of biological weathering
roots of plants (grow into the cliffs, weakening rock)
give an example of chemical weathering
- acid rain (corrodes and weakens rock)
- carbonation (link to carbon cycle)
What is weathering?
a sub-aerial process which breaks down rocks over time
How could weathering lead to an input of sediment?
rocks could break off and enter littoral zone
What is mass movement?
the large scale movement of material down a slope due to gravity
What are the 4 types of mass movement?
- rock fall
- creeping
- rotational slip/slumping
- landslides
Give 2 factors that can influence the prominence of weathering
temperature and climate
What type of weathering is prominent in warmer climates?
chemical
