Weathering Flashcards
Mechanical Weathering
Physical
Frost Wedging (Mechanical Weathering)
Liquid Water Freezes, expands and pushes creating cracks.
Cold at times and warm at times
Salt Crystal Growth (Mechanical Weathering)
Sandstones and Shale pick up salt and goes to the rocks where it leaves sand to expands
Exfoliation
Round Pulton, uplifts, expands creating cracks
EX: Crystals (Onion/Egg pealed back)
Chemical Weathering
Hydrolysis, Oxidation and Dissolution
Hydrolysis (Chemical Weathering)
The mineral has water in it, changing the minerals and adding acid dissolving elements and serve rocks weathering
Oxidation (Chemical Weathering)
when you have a solid element(iron) and mixes with oxygen, The rock becomes weaker and breaks down (shape over closers)
Dissolution (Chemical Weathering)
Does not give up minerals
Carbonic acid dissolves limestone
-Depression/Holes in the surface (Floats on the ocean)
Biomechanics (Biological Weathering)
Breaking the rocks apart
-trees breaks and push rock apart
Biochemical (Biological Weathering)
The acid gets into the minerals to eat away at the rock
-Organic Matter sticking to a rock
Angle of Repose
steepest angle that sediments can form without slumping or sliding
-Bigger or more angular it is the higher repose
