Fluvial Entrainment, Transportation and Depostion Flashcards
Entrainment
Process by which surface sediment is incorporated(added or picked) into a fluid flow (water and air)
Transportation
Movement of particles or dissolves species down stream
Dissolved Load
Mineral ions carried in solutions and invisible during transport
-results of chemical weathering
Suspended Load
Particles that are visible to the eye, its going to be clay, silt and sand
Bed Load:
Large Particles sand or gravel. Bounced or rolled along the bottom of the stream channel
Capacity
Total amount if sediment a stream is able to carry. It is driven by the power of the stream and stress it puts on the channel
Competency
Maximum size particle that a stream is able to hold. It is proportional to the flow
Deposition
Process by which the sediment is deposited on the land. It is a result of loss in kinetic energy (River slows down)
Hjulstrom Curve
What sediment size is being entrained, transported or deposited for a given velocity
