Weather Systems Flashcards
Three things needed for cloud formation
Condensation, cooling, lift
Height at which clouds form
Lifting condensation level
Four lifting mechanisms
Topographic, frontal, convection, convergence
What is a front?
The boundary between two air masses
Three sources of air mass
Polar, tropical, arctic
Track of air mass
Continental and maritime
Cloud progression in the warm front
Cirrus, cirrostratus, altostratus, nimbostratus
Cloud progression in cold front
Cumulonimbus, cumulus
Cold fronts are represented by
Triangles
Warm fronts are represented by
Semi-circles
Around mountainous areas, topographic lift can cause
Rain shadows
Winds which are warmed and dried on the lee side of a mountain
Foehn winds
Clouds formed when air is lifted topographically and then is unstable
Wave clouds (lenticular)
If air still has momentum at the top of the mountain, it can form
Cumulonimbus
Stable planetary boundary layer is when temperature
Increases with height then inverts
