Weather Symbols And Tools Flashcards
Air mass
It is a large body of air with similar properties through it.
Maritime Polar air
Cold, Humid
Continental polar air
Cold, dry
Maritime tropical air
warm, humid
Continental Tropical air
Warm, dry
Fronts
Are boundaries. Are where the weather happens. Moved by winds.
Cold front
Mass meets and causes a warm air mass to rise. Fast moving. Thunderstorms, heavy rain or snow. Brings cooler temperatures.
Warm front
Warm air mass meets and overrides a cold air mass. Moves over cold air. Long periods of light drizzles. Warmer temperatures.
Stationary front
Cold air mass meets a warm mass and results in little movement. Drizzles, doesn’t bring heavy precipitation. Little movement, or moves back and forth over the same area.
Occluded front
A cold air mass overtakes a slower moving warm air mass and forces warm air up. The cold air continues advancing until it meets another cold mass. Brings cooler temperature. Usually brings more precipitation.
Anemometer
Measures wind speed
Barometer
Measure air pressure
Hygrometer
Measures moisture in the air
Rain gauge
Measures amount of rainfall.
Radar
Measures wind and precipitation inside a storm
