Weather Patterns Flashcards
Convection current
Gases or liquids that rise and fall in a circular path
Sea breeze
When warm air rises during the day time off the land and the cold air from the water takes its place moving over the land creating a breeze coming from the sea to the land.
Land breeze
When cold air above the land at night time falls to the ocean and the warm air from the sea rises to fill in its place on land creating a breeze coming from the land to the sea.
Coriolis effect
When The rotation of the earth causes objects in the Northern Hemisphere to deflect and move to the right while objects in the Southern Hemisphere to deflect and move left.
Jet stream
A band of very fast moving winds caused by differences in temperature. About 10 kilo. Above the ground. Says WEEE in the northern hemisphere and says EWWW in the southern hemisphere
Trade winds
Winds that blow towards the equator. Brings cold air from the poles to the tropics. Affects the moisture in the air. Used by sailors to sail west.
Doldrums
A spot near the equator where there are very few winds. This air current traps ships that use wind to sail there ships.
Prevailing winds
This brings warm air to the poles from the equator. It blows away from the equator to the poles.
Prevailing westerlies
Blows away from the equator. Blows WEEE it is found over the United States.
Polar easterlies
They are winds found at the poles. They are winds that move EWWW.
Gulf Stream
It brings warm air/water from the equator to the poles.(found on the east coast of the U.S; EX: of prevailing westerlies)
El Niño👦🏻
Band of warm ocean temperatures that develop of the coast of South America. Can cause droughts. Warms up the climate.
La Niña👧🏽
Band of cold ocean temperatures that develop of the coast of South America. Can cause more precipitation. Can cause floods. Cools the climate.
